What are your hopes for Quake 3/QL in 2009?
Destrukt: I'm hoping to see some events pop up besides QuakeCon. Whether its AGP, WCG, or ESWC, I just want more events. Quake Live
is going to be an incredible game and the scene should be revived.
Do you think Quake is dying? - Why would someone say otherwise?
Destrukt: I don't think Quake is dying. Quake 3 has been around a very long time, and has had a major event at least once a year. It has
resurged time and time again as a tournament game, and I think Quake Live only reiterates that.
Destrukt: The only reason someone would say otherwise is just pure ignorance. Tournaments or not, the game's community has always
stayed around in some form.
What is it exactly about Quake Live that leads you to believe that it will develop into something more than what we have right now?
Destrukt: In the way of tournaments/events etc
Destrukt: Well for one it is browser based. For two it's free. Three the game play is absolutely amazing. It is fast paced, smooth, crisp,
and the netcode is very good too. It is just simply a recreation of a game with input from the community for the most part.
Obviously you had a great deal of yourself invested into CGS, what are your thoughts on its closure now affecting the future of
competitive gaming, and in particular the growth of a game like Quake Live? - assuming that it could have been included into the CGS
eventually.
Destrukt: In a niche sub culture like we are in, it wasn't even really a surprise. I mean, I knew it was a risk going into it and I knew it
would have to pick up fast. The people behind it were very dedicated and really did believe in the cause. It is disappointing because that
league could have provided international attention for many pro gamers, sponsors, and games.
What are your feelings on CQ3 being the chosen game play over VQ3? How will this affect your performance in the tournament?
Destrukt: I don't think it will make much difference. I'm pretty apathetic to the choice.
You've trained and are friends with many other North American professionals, why go with Rapha as your teammate?
Destrukt: Heis a legitimate professional gamer. Obviously, his profile is higher now that he has won an event, but I always knew he was
good. Just like I knew chance was good years ago, just like I knew the people I picked for my old CGS team were good.
Destrukt: Plus he is a nice guy, a friend, and I know him well.
It's been a while since there has been a sizeable TDM tournament online for NA Q3, how will you and your partner be preparing for the
tournament and what are your expectations?
Destrukt: We'll be playing other teams, making sure we're on the same page. Our expectations are to win the event, we definitely have
the talent to do so, just need to work on the chemistry.
How do you feel about ospdm6? Do you have a good idea of how your team will play the map or are you going with whatever works?
Destrukt: I think the map is pretty big for 2v2, I would have rather seen like a ztn, but it will work. It's a map that will probably get
pretty chaotic because of its size in 2v2, but it should be decent.
Do you feel that the physics of CQ3 will allow the map to be played faster or controlled radically different than it would in VQ3?
Destrukt: Yea, definitely. There are a few "trick" jumps that can cut some angles off, but the map is still too big, mostly by placement
of power ups, but most "good" maps create this. So, the map itself is extremely good, but the strategy is pretty sloppy for 2v2.
Sloppy how?
Destrukt: Well, just ruins a "groove" or a style of a team, because it takes so long to get from point a to point b; so you'll have
scenarios with guys spawning across the map and just running around while they keep respawning until finally someone takes control
of a position.
What would you say to the argument that the size and layout of the map would encourage variety in the way a team will have to play the
maps, as opposed to maps like dm6 or ztn?
Destrukt: It's a fair argument. Like I said, the map will be ok, I just think of the 3 there could have been a better choice.
Ok. So in your opinion, what is the weakest part of your game? Anything from your experiences in practice that comes to mind?
Destrukt: I suppose just various situations where we just need to gain experience together. That's about it.
As the bracket and the match's progress, what do you think will be a consistent advantage for your team throughout the tournament?
Destrukt: I think in my case it'll be over all experience. In Rapha's case it will be that raw skill he has. And as a team I like the way
we've been communicating, so I'm feeling confident.
What two players do you look forward to facing off against?
Destrukt: I know most of the guys in this tournament. I'm looking forward to playing Icelore's team because he's always fun to play and
obviously you have the infamous teams like kgb/walter that will be a lot of fun to play as well.
Lastly, why wouldn't being a strong 1v1 player necessarily make someone a strong team player? – Do you feel that your team play with
your partner is affected by any of this?
Destrukt: That's all rubbish I think, it just boils down to experience with your partner in 2v2. As long as we get enough reps in we'll be
fine.
Sounds good to me, Thanks for the Interview and we look forward to seeing you guys in action.
